Kabir Singh or Arjun Reddy, we did the comparison of performances and the result is clear.
Kabir Singh opened with mixed reviews but Shahid Kapoor clearly stole the show. The magic of the director Sandeep Reddy Vanga worked once again after Arjun Reddy. The story, screenplay, and cinematography movies are frame by frame similar so the question is .. who did it better ? Kabir Singh or Arjun Reddy.
Shahid Kapoor / Vijay Deverekonda:
If you have seen Arjun Reddy before watching Kabir Singh, you will notice the difference between characters. Vijay Deverekonda has brilliantly lived through all the emotions and phases Arjun Reddy goes through, Anger, Love, Sorrow, Alcoholism, Addiction.
Shahid Kapoor, on the other hand, seemed angrier in the whole movie and couldn’t express the sadness in Kabir Singh’s life very well. There is scene post break up where the character is shown eating food and he remembers about his girlfriend and feels sad and angry at the same time and doesn’t feel like eating anymore.
There is an intense scene where after getting rejected and humiliated by the girl’s family, the character has a fight with his girl in the middle of the street. The girl is trying to calm him down and is trying to explain to him that these things happen with people in love but the character is outraged. The scene is all about Anger, Annoyance, and Rage.
Vijay Deverakonda made it feel that the anger came out naturally. It felt like he really went through the whole scenario in real life and hence is angry. Shahid Kapoor did pull it well but it felt like he was acting it for a scene.
The other cast of Kabir Singh is good too but the actors of Arjun Reddy are more convincing.
Kiara Advani / Shalini Pandey:
Kiara Advani was the best to play Preeti on screen from the actresses we have today. The innocence and characteristics that Preeti needs, Kiara Advani has them all. Shalini Pandey was the epitome of casting for Preethi. She looked innocent, angry, sad as and when the story needed.
I did not understand the logic behind keeping the name of other characters same as in Arjun Reddy. Not sure if the makers had a good reason behind it or was it just the case of lazy writing.
The character of Shiva, the protagonists best friend who stands beside him in all his thick and thin played by Rahul Ramakrishna in Arjun Reddy is far better than Soham Majumdar in Kabir Singh.
The genes travel in family, from one generation to another. If the character has Anger issues, which means his father or mother must be strong headed too. The father’s character played by Sanjay Swaroop in Arjun Reddy looked more convincing as his father rather than Suresh Oberoi who played the role mildly.
Arjan Bajwa as a brother in Kabir Singh was very good and so was Kamal Kamaraju in Arjun Reddy.
Kamini Kaushal as Kabir Singh’s grandmother was also very good just like Vasanthabhamadevi (popularly known as Kanchana) playing Arjun Reddy’s Grandmother.
If you have seen Arjun Reddy then you will not find the actors in Kabir Singh convincing enough to play the characters. If you have not seen Arjun Reddy then it is a delight to watch this not so happy love story. That is the best part about the remake, the essence of the characters is not lost.
But after everything, we must say, it needs lots of courage to make a movie like this, out of the box, breaking the love story stereotype, showing the reality that the protagonist can have flaws too. Hands down respect to Sandeep Reddy Vanga.
Fun Fact: Shahid Kapoor and Vijay Deverekonda both were not the directors first choice to play the characters. While Ranveer Singh was his first choice to play Kabir Singh, Sharwanand was his first choice to play Arjun Reddy.
